Welcome to the website of the Archaeological Museum of Kastoria. The Museum exhibits significant archaeological findings from the prefecture of Kastoria, a geographical area that during antiquity was the main part of the so called ancient Orestis.

Environment and Topography

Orestis or Orestia, was the name given by the ancient writers to the part of Macedonia that is bounded by the mounts Grammos, Voion, Askion, Vernon (Vitsi), Triklarion and the Prespes lakes

Section 1 Early Iron Age

The Early Iron Age in the area of Kastoria is mainly known from the cemeteries that have been identified and researched.

Section 2 - The Kingdom of Orestis

Ancient Orestis from the middle of the 6th to the 4th century BCE.

Section 3 -Orestis as part of the Macedonian Kingdom

Ancient Orestis in the time of Alexander the Great (4th - 3rd century BC).

Section 4 – "free" Orestis as part of the Roman State
